In girls' soccer, sometimes being successful on the field is the byproduct of being friends off it.

Knowing that connection has driven coaches, like John King of Esperanza (Anaheim, Calif.) and Chuck Morales of Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), to intertwine team-building that have nothing to do with soccer into practice.

"We take a retreat to the mountains and have [the players] hang out for three days," said King, in his 10th season. "It's had a major impact on our program.

"It's good for the girls to get to know each other. That way, when it's time to take to the field for battle, you are not alone - you're playing with friends. And when you are playing for friends, you give extra effort."

King recently moved the retreat from the preseason to the week before the postseason, and he said it directly contributed to the team's 27-0-4 showing last season. The Aztecs won Southern Section and Southern Regional titles last year.

"It's a long season, a lot of games," he said. "The players are tired, run down. So now we do [the retreat] right before the postseason to rejuvenate us."

Former Monte Vista (Danville, Calif.) coach Greg Fish and Morales also built retreats into their schedules. In fact, players from Santa Margarita and Esperanza, now both perennial California powers, once ran into each during a retreat to Big Bear Lake in California.

So what exactly happens during those trips? Last year, it snowed during Esperanza's trip to the mountains.

"We had snowball fights for three straight days".

Team-Building Retreats
